U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have signed an interim agreement aimed at ending hostilities between the United States and Iran, according to statements from officials involved in the negotiations. The signing took place ahead of a formal ceremony that had been scheduled for June 19 in Switzerland.
Trump signed the agreement during a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles on Wednesday evening. Following the signing, Trump told reporters that the agreement had been finalized. Iranian officials later confirmed that President Pezeshkian signed the document electronically, bringing the agreement into effect.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government played a mediation role during negotiations, also signed the memorandum of understanding as a witness and facilitator, according to previous announcements from Islamabad. Pakistan, along with Qatar and other regional partners, participated in efforts to broker the deal.
According to details released by U.S. and international officials, the agreement includes an immediate halt to military operations, steps toward reopening key maritime routes including the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of certain U.S. naval restrictions. Additional negotiations on long-term security and nuclear issues are expected during a 60-day follow-up period.
