A suspected international drug smuggling network operating through Toronto Pearson International Airport has been uncovered following the arrest of six baggage and ramp employees over the past year, according to reports citing an RCMP investigation.
Authorities allege the scheme involved switching baggage tags on passengers’ luggage and replacing them with suitcases containing illegal drugs destined for international locations. The operation allegedly led to several innocent Canadian travellers being detained abroad on drug trafficking allegations.
Reports indicate at least 17 passengers were taken into custody over the past year after narcotics were discovered in luggage connected to their baggage tags. Investigations later determined those travellers had no involvement in the smuggling activity and they were released.
The affected flights reportedly included destinations such as the Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Morocco, Bermuda, the Philippines and South Korea. Some of those countries impose severe penalties for drug trafficking, including lengthy prison terms and, in certain jurisdictions, the death penalty.
According to reports, investigators believe the known cases may represent only a portion of the activity, as authorities cannot confirm how many travellers may have unknowingly had their identities or baggage information used in international drug trafficking operations.
The case has raised concerns about baggage security procedures and internal oversight at major Canadian airports. The RCMP investigation remains ongoing and authorities have not ruled out additional arrests.
