Discussion around a possible return of former Punjab chief minister Capt. Amarinder Singh to the Congress party has intensified ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly election.

The speculation follows comments by former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who said Amarinder Singh remains in contact with Congress leaders. Hooda and Amarinder Singh are widely regarded as longtime political associates, prompting political observers to question whether efforts could be underway to bring the former chief minister back into the party.

Responding to the discussion, Punjab BJP spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliwal said there was no reason to draw broader conclusions from the fact that political leaders remain in contact. He noted that Hooda had only stated that Amarinder Singh was in touch with party members and had not indicated any plans regarding a return to Congress.

Senior Congress leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala and Kumari Selja have also reportedly downplayed suggestions that Hooda is engaged in discussions about leadership changes or party realignments, emphasizing that Hooda's remarks should not be interpreted beyond their stated meaning.

The renewed speculation comes amid reports of dissatisfaction within sections of the BJP after senior party decisions in Punjab. Political observers have pointed to claims that Amarinder Singh was not consulted before the appointment of a new Punjab BJP president, a development some have cited as a possible source of discontent. However, no official statement has been issued by Amarinder Singh regarding a return to Congress.
