Saskatchewan Becomes Canada’s First Carbon Tax-Free Province

Saskatchewan is set to become Canada’s first completely carbon tax-free province. Premier Scott Moe has announced the elimination of the industrial carbon tax, effective April 1. He stated that the move will provide immediate financial relief to families, farmers, businesses, and industries, especially in the face of potential tariffs.

This decision follows Premier Mark Carney’s March 14 announcement to eliminate the consumer carbon tax, also effective April 1. As a result, Saskatchewan residents will no longer pay a federal carbon tax on home heating, nor will there be a provincial carbon tax on the province’s industries.

Premier Moe highlighted Saskatchewan’s status as the first province in Canada to achieve carbon tax-free status. However, the provincial opposition noted that this move is expected to reduce Saskatchewan’s $12 million budget surplus by approximately $430 million.
