Richmond RCMP say 14 people were taken into custody during a one day retail theft enforcement operation earlier this month, marking the first Boost and Bust initiative of 2026. The February 15 operation focused on businesses in the city’s downtown core and commercial areas.
Police said 13 individuals were arrested in connection with alleged shoplifting incidents. Investigators plan to recommend charges in 10 of those cases. Two of those arrested were youths and will be referred to restorative justice programs. Officers also offered referrals to social services for everyone who was taken into custody.
A separate arrest involved a person who was found to be wanted on an outstanding warrant from another jurisdiction. That individual was transferred to the appropriate police agency and is also being investigated in relation to a previous theft file in Richmond. Police indicated they will proceed with recommending charges in that matter as well.
The operation involved frontline officers working in plainclothes alongside loss prevention officers from several retail stores. Police say the coordinated effort allowed store staff to share information in real time with a dedicated enforcement team. Merchandise recovered during the operation, including clothing, personal goods and food items, is estimated to be worth about $3,200.
Officers also opened an intelligence file on two individuals believed to have links to an organized retail theft group. Follow up with partner agencies is ongoing. The initiative is supported by provincial funding through the Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement Program and forms part of the detachment’s broader strategy to address property crime in Richmond.
Retail theft has been an ongoing concern for businesses across Metro Vancouver, including in Richmond’s busy shopping districts. Police say additional Boost and Bust operations are planned throughout the year and are urging residents and business owners to report suspicious activity promptly.
