The Punjab government has given the green signal to start direct sowing of paddy in the state from May 15, while transplanting through seedlings will be started in a phased manner across the state from June 1.
According to the government notification, paddy sowing will start first in Faridkot, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Fazilka districts. Then from June 5, other districts including Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur will join it. The time for paddy sowing has been fixed from June 9 in Mansa, Moga, Barnala, Ludhiana, Malerkotla, Patiala, Sangrur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar and Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.
It is noteworthy that in the past years, paddy sowing in Punjab has been starting from June 15. Balbir Singh Rajewal, senior leader of the United Kisan Morcha, says that early sowing of paddy will prove to be detrimental to the groundwater level.
