Prime Minister Mark Carney called on the United States to build a renewed and stronger partnership with Canada during a speech in New York, saying both countries need deeper cooperation in key sectors amid growing global competition.
Carney said Canada is now more resilient and confident than in previous years and positioned the country as a reliable partner for the United States, particularly in the energy sector. He said Canada is capable of helping meet American energy needs while supporting stability in North American supply chains.
Addressing the issue of Chinese electric vehicles entering the Canadian market, Carney said many vehicles historically linked to Chinese production have been associated with Tesla manufacturing operations in China. He said most Chinese EVs expected to enter Canada in the short term are likely to be Tesla vehicles.
Carney also said Canadian consumers could see access to lower-cost electric vehicles with broader driving range in the future. However, he said the process would move forward under a controlled regulatory framework.
The remarks come as Canada and the United States continue discussions on trade, clean energy and electric vehicle supply chains. Additional federal policy announcements related to the EV sector are expected in the coming months.
