Prime Minister Mark Carney urged Albertans to remain part of Canada and vote against separation during a large rally in Calgary on Thursday night.
Addressing a crowd of approximately 5,000 people, Carney acknowledged that Albertans’ grievances with Ottawa were legitimate, adding that the federal government was working with the province to address their concerns.
Carney warned that voting against Canada could trigger serious consequences, leading to deep divisions, significant uncertainty and the loss of opportunities for years to come.
During his passionate speech, the prime minister also referred indirectly to the United States while warning about external forces. He said the world was already dangerous and divided, and that some outside forces were trying to break Canada apart to bring the country under their control.
Carney stressed that Alberta was a vital part of Canada’s economy, adding that the country could remain strong only by staying united.
