Two major wildfires burning near Clinton, B.C. have merged, increasing the combined fire area to approximately 670 square kilometres, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

Officials say the merged Pear Lake and Fifteenmile Creek wildfires have damaged homes and other structures on the outskirts of the Clinton community. The full extent of the damage has not yet been confirmed.

BC Wildfire Service Fire Information Officer Shae Stearns said firefighters continue working to protect homes in Clinton as crews respond to the fast-moving wildfire. Residents of Clinton were placed under an evacuation order on Friday.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has also issued evacuation orders for 70 Mile House and surrounding areas as wildfire activity continues. Authorities are urging residents in affected communities to follow evacuation instructions and monitor official updates.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, about 140 wildfires are currently active across British Columbia. Nearly 1,000 firefighters, 130 pieces of heavy equipment, and 162 helicopters and air tankers have been deployed to support suppression efforts. Of the active wildfires, 113 were caused by lightning.
