Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says no words can do justice to the children whose bodies were found in unmarked graves at a residential school in Kamloops.

She started her COVID-19 briefing today by expressing her sorrow for the 215 Indigenous children and the countless others who died alone, scared and far from their families in residential schools.

Dr. Henry pledged her commitment to changing systems and laws that continue to perpetuate racism that hurts Indigenous peoples in countless ways.

She added Canadians can't get stuck in the shame and grief of what was done to First Nations children and families, instead they must commit to taking meaningful action to uphold the rights of Indigenous people.

The submission was made as part of arguments concerning Singh’s request for relief that would enable him to take part in parliamentary proceedings. The court observed that

AFN national chief says Alberta separation cannot proceed without First Nations consent

The national chief of the Assembly of First Nations says any attempt by Alberta to separate from Canada would require the consent of First Nations and cannot proceed without respecting treaty rights. Speaking Tuesday at an AFN conference in Calgary, Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak described the province’s separatist movement as illegitimate and unconstitutional. She said Canada is founded on treaties between the Crown and First Nations, and those agreements would remain in force regardless of provincial political movements. “Canada is treaty territory,” Woodhouse Nepinak told delegates. “First

Alberta man charged in 1992 sexual assault case following DNA breakthrough

An Alberta man has been charged in connection with a sexual assault that took place more than 30 years ago in the eastern Alberta community of Two Hills. RCMP say the alleged assault occurred in June 1992, when a woman was attacked in her home at knifepoint while her children were present. At the time, investigators were unable to identify a suspect, though DNA evidence was collected from the scene. Police say the investigation was reopened after a familial DNA match was identified in 2023. That development led officers to identify a potential suspect and obtain a warrant to compare his DNA wi
