Nepal Floods: Death Toll Surpasses 1,000, Nearly 4,000 Still Missing

The death toll from devastating floods and landslides in Nepal has crossed 1,000, nearly a week after a catastrophic disaster swept through parts of the Himalayan country. Rescue teams are continuing a massive search operation for thousands of people who remain missing, using heavy machinery, helicopters and excavators to reach remote and badly damaged areas.

According to the latest official figures, the confirmed death toll has reached 1,003, while around 4,000 people remain missing. The missing include 590 foreign nationals from 39 countries, highlighting the international impact of the disaster.

The disaster began on August 26 after a collapse involving a glacier sent a massive surge of ice, rocks and mud through valleys and settlements in Nepal’s Himalayan border region with China. Roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and communication infrastructure were severely damaged, leaving several remote communities cut off.

Prime Minister Balendra Shah said more than 11,000 people have been rescued from affected areas. Authorities have also begun restoring electricity and communication services in some locations, while emergency assistance is being provided to people who have lost their homes and belongings.
