More than 2,500 federal public servants in Canada have voluntarily left their jobs as part of the federal government’s Workforce Adjustment process aimed at reducing the size of the public service.
According to figures from the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, a total of 2,555 employees decided to voluntarily leave their positions after receiving Workforce Adjustment notices over the past year. Their departures have been approved by the government.
The federal government is working on a plan to reduce the size of the public sector workforce by 2029. Under the Canada Strong Budget 2025, the government outlined plans to eliminate thousands of positions and introduce early retirement packages.
As part of the program, several federal departments have identified a significant number of positions for reduction. Federal departments and agencies have identified 17,977 non-executive positions and 832 executive positions for elimination through workforce adjustment measures, attrition and early retirement.
