Montreal police have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of another man at the Guy-Concordia metro station in downtown Montreal late Saturday night.
Investigators say the suspect has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 37-year-old victim, who was attacked on the metro platform around 11:20 p.m. The victim was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Police confirmed that the suspect and victim were known to each other, suggesting the incident was not a random attack. The accused was arrested Tuesday night in Montreal North and is scheduled to appear in court later today.
Authorities said the incident marks the 29th homicide on the Island of Montreal so far this year, continuing a concerning trend of violent altercations in public spaces across the city.
Community organizations in Montreal, including those representing South Asian and other immigrant groups, have expressed growing concern about urban safety and late-night transit security, particularly for students and workers who rely on public transport in downtown areas.
Montreal police say they are increasing patrols and surveillance across the metro network to reassure the public and prevent further violence.
