Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed deep disappointment over allegations that Canada is interfering in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, particularly those made by U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra.
Speaking to reporters in Istanbul on Friday, Carney said the allegations had no truth to them and firmly rejected the claims. He also expressed disappointment that Hoekstra was using his role as ambassador to make such accusations.
Carney stressed that Canada does not interfere in other countries' democratic processes and has no intention of doing so.
The controversy follows a fact sheet released by the U.S. Embassy in Ottawa on Wednesday, which accused Canada of attempting to influence American politics. In response, Canada has instructed its diplomats to avoid meeting U.S. midterm election candidates or attending their events as a precaution against potential rumours or misunderstandings.
