Man arrested after fatal stabbing in Victoria, VIIMCU Investigating

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) is investigating a homicide that occurred in downtown Victoria early this morning. One man has died.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m. this morning, Patrol officers were called to 500-block of Yates Street for a report that a man had been stabbed. Officers attended and located the man suffering from life-threatening injuries. Officers provided emergency first aid before B.C. Emergency Health Services paramedics arrived, took over care, and transported the man to hospital. Sadly, the man died from his injuries at hospital.

Detectives with VicPD’s Major Crimes unit, along with officers from VicPD’s Forensic Identification Services, were called to the scene and continued the investigation in coordination with VIIMCU. VIIMCU has now assumed conduct of this homicide investigation.

Shortly before 2 a.m. officers identified a suspect. Patrol officers, working with a unit from the Integrated Canine Service, located and arrested the man who remains in custody.

The investigation remains ongoing. The BC Coroners Service is continuing an independent investigation to determine all of the facts surrounding the death.

Investigators believe this is an isolated incident and there is no risk to the public.
