A local state of emergency has been declared in parts of Kananaskis Country west of Calgary as flooding has damaged road access and left some people unable to leave the area.
Alberta Parks said emergency crews are supporting campground evacuations where necessary, monitoring infrastructure and maintaining road closures as conditions continue to change. Officials have asked people already in the area to remain where they are and urged visitors to postpone travel until conditions improve.
Authorities have not said how many people are stranded or whether there have been any injuries related to the flooding. Alberta Parks said William Watson Lodge is available as a temporary shelter for people who need a safe, dry place to stay.
In nearby Canmore, officials warned residents to be prepared to leave immediately if an evacuation order is issued and advised households to pack enough essentials to remain away from home for at least 72 hours.
"Conditions are rapidly changing, and flowing water and debris pose a serious threat to human safety and infrastructure," the Town of Canmore said in a public advisory Monday, urging residents to stay away from creeks, embankments and pathways.
