Liberals win three federal byelections, strengthen majority government

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won all three federal byelections held Monday, increasing its strength in the House of Commons and securing a majority government.

The most notable result came in Quebec’s Chicoutimi–Le Fjord riding, where Liberal candidate won the seat from the Conservatives. The Liberals also retained the Ontario riding of Beaches–East York and British Columbia’s North Vancouver–Capilano.

The three victories bring the Liberals’ total to 173 seats in the House of Commons, according to the results provided. That is one seat above the number required to hold a majority.

The results come at a critical time for the Carney government as Canada continues to face tariff and trade pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. The government has emphasized protecting Canadian interests in trade negotiations, although the byelection results alone do not establish that voters were endorsing any specific trade policy.

Parliament’s fall sitting is scheduled to begin Sept. 21. With a majority, the Liberal government will have greater ability to advance legislation and its agenda without relying on opposition parties to maintain confidence in the House.
