Kalwinder Dosanjh Case: Lawyer Questions Fairness of Investigation

The lawyer representing Vancouver police officer Kalwinder Dosanjh has raised questions about the fairness and transparency of the investigation into his client.

Dosanjh, who has served with the Vancouver Police Department for 26 years, is also the founder of the Kids Play Foundation, an organization that works to keep young people away from drugs and gang involvement.

Following a secret investigation conducted by the Vancouver Police Department for about two and a half years, Dosanjh was charged last week with nine offences, including fraud, theft and breach of trust involving more than $3 million.

According to police, the investigation is connected to housing developments, with approximately 19 alleged victims coming forward to investigators.

However, Dosanjh’s lawyer, Jovan Narwal, has questioned why the Vancouver Police Department conducted the investigation itself rather than having an outside agency handle the case.

Narwal argued that when a police department investigates one of its own officers, questions can arise about the independence and transparency of the process, particularly when police have described the case as a matter of public trust.

Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai said the department notified the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner at the very beginning of the investigation.

Dosanjh has denied the allegations against him and said he intends to prove his innocence in court.
