Canadian Culture Minister Marc Miller has indicated that the federal government is working to advance Bill C-34 as quickly as possible. The proposed legislation includes a ban on social media for children and the establishment of a new digital safety regulator.
Speaking at a conference at McGill University in Montreal on Thursday, Miller said the government was moving forward with the bill as quickly as it could, although he did not provide a specific timeline.
The legislation would be overseen by Canada's proposed Digital Safety and Data Protection Commission. Officials have previously suggested that establishing the new body could take up to 18 months.
However, several experts, including Canadian Medical Association head Alex Munter, have raised concerns about the lengthy timeline, arguing that parents want stronger protections for children on social media as soon as possible.
Miller acknowledged these concerns, saying he was also eager to see the commission established quickly and was working to speed up the process.
