Former Vancouver mayor Kennedy Stewart says he has been interviewed by federal lawyers regarding what he alleges is an investigation into a British Columbia cabinet minister for possible collaboration with China’s government.
Stewart said Premier David Eby and other cabinet members are aware of the matter. He did not identify the minister and did not provide documentation to support the existence or scope of any investigation.
The RCMP said it is reviewing a request for comment but did not confirm any investigation. The B.C. government did not respond to a request for comment by publication time. Connect Newsroom has also contacted the Office of the Premier for clarification. No response was received by publication time.
Stewart said he alerted senior government officials after confirming the identity of the individual during his interaction with federal lawyers. He alleged that the information was passed “to the top of the chain,” but said no action has followed. He also said he signed a non-disclosure agreement, but did not specify with whom.
The allegations come amid ongoing national scrutiny of foreign interference in Canadian politics. Stewart described the issue as a “serious problem” at both the municipal and provincial levels, but provided no additional evidence to substantiate the claim in this instance.
