Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that former British Columbia premier John Horgan has been appointed as Canada's next ambassador to Germany.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office says Horgan has a proven track record of dedicated public service and will provide strategic advice to Trudeau in his new role.

Horgan, 64, was first elected to the legislative assembly in 2005 and was re-elected four consecutive times, twice as premier.

The statement says Canada and Germany face complex challenges, including food and energy insecurity, and will work to advance shared priorities.

Trudeau says Horgan is a passionate public servant and an experienced leader, and he's confident that he'll continue to serve Canada well to advance the two countries' common interests.

The Canadian Embassy in Germany is located in Berlin, and there are also consulates in Munich and Duesseldorf.

Remains identified as missing Calgary man, police investigating death as homicide

Police have identified the remains of a Calgary man who disappeared 2 1/2 years ago and are investigating his death as a homicide. The remains were discovered in May 2024 at an undisclosed location outside Calgary. Robert Stanley Mainland was last seen in January 2023 at a 7-Eleven convenience store. He was 65 at the time of his disappearance and had lived in the same northeast Calgary neighbourhood for over 40 years. Police say they believe Mainland was the victim of foul play. They're asking members of the public to come forward with information to help with the investigation.

Small plane hits fence and flips, leaving one seriously injured in rural Alberta

One person was seriously injured after a small plane crashed on a private airstrip in central Alberta. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada says the two-seater was flying Tuesday from Wetaskiwin to Linden, a town about 100 kilometres northeast of Calgary.
