Two people are dead and two others including a child remain in critical condition following a two-vehicle collision northeast of Calgary on Saturday morning, according to RCMP.
Mounties said officers responded to reports of a crash involving a Ford Escape and a GMC truck towing a trailer near an intersection in Rocky View County. Police said the Ford Escape was carrying four occupants at the time of the collision.
RCMP confirmed two female passengers in the Ford Escape died from their injuries. One was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second died later in hospital.
A child and an adult man who were also inside the Ford Escape were transported to hospital in critical condition, police said. The driver of the GMC truck was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Police have not released the identities or ages of those involved. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. RCMP have not said whether weather, speed, or road conditions were factors in the crash.
The collision caused traffic disruptions in the area while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene.
Rocky View County surrounds Calgary and includes several busy highway corridors used by commuters and commercial traffic.
RCMP are expected to continue investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash and may release additional information as it becomes available.
