One person has died following a serious multi-vehicle collision on Highway 1 in Surrey that forced a full closure of the westbound lanes during the Monday morning commute. BC Highway Patrol says the investigation is ongoing and officers are asking the public for additional witnesses and dash camera footage.
Police say the first 911 call came shortly after 7:15 a.m. after three vehicles collided on westbound Highway 1 near the 176th Street exit. Investigators believe one vehicle crossed over from the eastbound lanes, resulting in a head-on crash.
Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol said the severity of the collision required an immediate shutdown of the highway so emergency crews could assist the injured and begin the investigation. He also urged the public to be mindful of the families affected and to avoid sharing graphic images online.
Authorities have confirmed one fatality but say no further details about those involved will be released at this time to allow families to be notified and to grieve privately. The crash remains under active investigation as police work to determine the sequence of events.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has dash camera video showing driving behaviour before the crash is asked to contact BC Highway Patrol in Burnaby at 604-526-9744 and quote file number 1003 2025-4185. Drivers are advised to check DriveBC for updates on traffic delays and detours.
