Dingell Slams Trump Over Strained Canada-U.S. Relations, Urges Resumption of Talks

Michigan Democratic Congresswoman Debbie Dingell has strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s policies amid worsening relations between Canada and the United States, saying it is an extremely disappointing time for the country when the president appears more comfortable strengthening ties with dictators than talking to one of America’s closest friends and allies.

Dingell said Canada and the United States share the world’s longest international border and are connected by generations of friendship, family ties, democratic values and the geography of the Great Lakes. Her comments come as trade negotiations between the two countries have broken down and tensions have escalated over tariffs.

She urged Trump to treat Canada as a close partner and called on both countries to return to the negotiating table immediately to work toward a fair and comprehensive agreement.

Dingell warned that if the two countries remain locked in a prolonged trade war, it could hurt hardworking people and businesses on both sides of the border. She has previously argued that Trump’s trade policies risk disrupting highly integrated supply chains and harming American workers and companies.

Her remarks come amid a sharp deterioration in Canada-U.S. relations following the collapse of recent trade talks. The United States has imposed new 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada has announced matching retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products.
