The Canada Super60 cricket series lit up Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium this weekend - and the excitement reached a new level when former Indian cricket star Yuvraj Singh was spotted in the stands alongside B.C. Premier David Eby.

The two appeared together on the stadium’s big screen during the women’s match between Vancouver Thunderbirds and Toronto Sixers, drawing loud cheers from the crowd. Cricket fans in the arena - many from Surrey and the Lower Mainland’s South Asian communities - welcomed the moment as a sign of the sport’s growing stature in Canada.

Premier Eby’s office had earlier declined to comment on the meeting, but Connect FM’s reporting team, present on-site, captured an exclusive moment when Yuvraj Singh and the Premier exchanged a handshake on camera.

The Canada Super60 tournament, hosted at the iconic BC Place - traditionally a soccer venue - marks a milestone for cricket in British Columbia. The province has seen rapid growth in cricket participation, especially among South Asian, Caribbean, and British expatriate communities in Surrey, Abbotsford, and Vancouver. Surrey, in particular, has become known as Canada’s cricket capital, with dozens of community leagues, youth academies, and recent calls for a dedicated international-standard cricket stadium.

While it remains unclear if Yuvraj and Eby discussed cricket infrastructure during their meeting, community organizers are hopeful that such high-profile attention will push the province to invest in a permanent cricket facility - a move that could help Canada host larger international events in the future.
