Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s diesel supply deal with Russia, warning that it could undermine efforts to establish peace in Ukraine.
Carney said the decision to supply millions of tonnes of Russian diesel to the United States and global markets runs counter to the policies of Canada and its allies. He warned that the deal could generate significant revenue for Russia, potentially allowing Moscow to intensify its war against Ukraine.
However, Carney also welcomed efforts to establish an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by phone on Sunday. During the conversation, he reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to protecting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Carney also said Canada remains prepared to tighten its economic sanctions against Russia if necessary.
