Prime Minister Mark Carney and British Columbia Premier David Eby announced Thursday that they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) under which the federal government has committed to maintaining the oil tanker ban on British Columbia's North Coast.

According to the announcement, the agreement also provides that British Columbia would receive full compensation if any future oil pipeline crosses the province. The MOU does not require the province to support future oil pipeline projects as a condition of the agreement.

Carney said the agreement could help attract up to $150 billion in new investment to British Columbia. Additional details on how that investment would be achieved were not immediately provided.

The announcement has prompted discussion about future pipeline proposals. However, no new pipeline project through British Columbia has been formally approved as part of the agreement. Carney is scheduled to meet Alberta Premier Danielle Smith later Thursday, where further details on a proposed pipeline to the B.C. coast are expected.

Car-Motorcycle Collision in Kelowna, Rider Killed

Kelowna RCMP has confirmed the death of a motorcycle rider following a crash on Highway 97 Thursday night. Police said the collision occurred at around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Harvey Avenue and Ethel Street, involving a black sedan and a motorcycle. The motorcycle caught fire shortly after the crash. Corporal Steven Lang said the motorcycle rider was pronounced dead when emergency crews and police arrived at the scene.
