Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed Member of Parliament and former cabinet minister Jonathan Wilkinson as Canada’s next ambassador to the European Union, according to a news release from the Prime Minister’s Office.
Wilkinson, who represents North Vancouver–Capilano, previously served in senior cabinet roles under former prime minister Justin Trudeau, including minister of natural resources and minister of environment and climate change. The Prime Minister’s Office said Wilkinson brings “proven experience, judgment and leadership” to the role as Canada seeks to strengthen its relationship with the EU.
The appointment comes ahead of Carney’s planned participation in the European Political Community summit in Armenia this weekend, where he is expected to engage with European leaders on economic and geopolitical issues. The Prime Minister’s Office did not specify when Wilkinson will formally assume the post.
Carney also acknowledged the work of Stéphane Dion, who has served as Canada’s special envoy to the European Union and Europe.
Wilkinson’s move to the diplomatic role will require him to resign his seat in the House of Commons, triggering a byelection in his Metro Vancouver riding. Under federal rules, a byelection must be called within 180 days of the seat becoming vacant.
