Canada's Immigration Minister Lena Diab has announced the removal of limits on the federal government's online passport renewal service, making it available to all eligible Canadian adults aged 16 and older.
Speaking at a news conference in Vancouver, Diab said eligible applicants living in Canada can now submit passport renewal applications online at any time without waiting for appointment availability.
According to the federal government, the expanded digital service is intended to make passport renewals more accessible and reduce the need for in-person visits.
Under the new system, applicants will no longer be required to mail original documents as part of the renewal process. The government says online applications will have a processing time of approximately 20 business days.
Applicants must be physically present in Canada to use the online renewal service. They will need to upload a digital passport-sized photograph taken by a commercial photographer, along with the required supporting documents in digital format.
Canadians who prefer the traditional application process can continue to renew their passports in person at a passport office or by mail. According to the federal government, both options will remain available.
