Canada Deploys 10 Officials to Nepal to Support Canadians Affected by Devastating Floods

The Canadian government has deployed a team of 10 officials to Kathmandu to provide assistance to Canadians affected by the devastating floods in Nepal.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand confirmed the deployment in a statement shared on social media. According to Minister Anand, the team includes a senior RCMP officer and is working closely with local police, hospitals, trekking companies and international partners to locate missing Canadians and support affected families.

The federal government has also announced $5 million in emergency humanitarian assistance for Nepal as the country continues to deal with the aftermath of the disaster. Canada has advised its citizens to avoid travelling to areas affected by the floods.

The catastrophic flooding, reportedly triggered by a glacier-related event in the Himalayan border region, has claimed the lives of more than 1,000 people, while around 4,000 people remain missing.

Among those reported missing are approximately 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents, prompting Canadian authorities to step up search and consular support efforts on the ground.
