The Canadian government has introduced a new penalty system to crack down on fraudulent immigration agents. Under the new rules issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), individuals who provide false immigration advice or charge fees for immigration services without proper authorization could face fines ranging from $5,000 to as much as $1.5 million.
According to the new guidelines, anyone acting as an immigration representative without a valid licence or required authorization will face a minimum fine of $5,000.
Additionally, individuals who deliberately submit false or misleading information in an applicant's immigration file will face a minimum penalty of $15,000. The fine could increase to $1.5 million if the application is approved based on false information or if the individual repeatedly violates the rules.
IRCC is also planning to launch a public registry in 2027, which will disclose the names and details of fraudulent and unauthorized immigration agents who have been fined.
