Canada Announces $27.6 Billion in Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Imports

The Canadian government has announced dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on approximately $27.6 billion worth of U.S. imports in response to tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne made the announcement in Ottawa, saying the counter-tariffs will take effect on September 8, 2026.

The new retaliatory tariffs will range from 15% to 50%. The government’s nearly 100-page list includes a wide range of American products, including seafood, paper products, furniture, clothing, tools and motorcycles.

The list also includes dairy products, cosmetics and certain wood products, which will face tariffs of up to 50%.

Meanwhile, the retaliatory tariff on U.S. steel and aluminum products, which was previously set at 25%, will also be increased to 50%.

Canadian officials stressed that the measures are not intended to target any particular American business or state. Instead, the government says the goal is to protect and support Canadian industries and workers affected by U.S. tariffs.

The latest move marks another escalation in the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade dispute as Ottawa responds to the Trump administration’s higher tariffs.
