Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand met with her Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake this week — marking another step toward rebuilding bilateral relations between the two countries.

The meeting took place on Tuesday, with Jaishankar attending the G7 discussions as an outreach partner. Anand said both ministers discussed ways to deepen cooperation in law enforcement, trade, energy, security, and people-to-people connections.

During their conversation, Anand extended condolences for the victims of a recent car explosion in New Delhi and reaffirmed Canada’s solidarity with the people of India during this difficult time.

This was the third meeting between Anand and Jaishankar in just 45 days. The two previously met at the United Nations General Assembly in late September, followed by Anand’s official visit to India in October.

Jaishankar also met with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe during his Canadian visit, where they explored opportunities to expand collaboration in energy, food, and fertilizer sectors — areas where India represents a significant market for the province.

WestJet says it will increase checked baggage fees starting Thursday, adding new costs for air travellers across its network. The change follows a similar move by Air Canada announced last week. According to a WestJet statement, passengers checking bags at the airport will pay an additional $10 for each of the first two checked bags. Fees for overweight baggage will also rise, with increases of up to $50 depending on weight. The airline attributed the decision to “global conditions” and shifting trends in the aviation sector, but did not provide a detailed cost breakdown in its announcemen
