Canada adds new products to counter-tariff list targeting U.S.

The Canadian government has added several products to its counter-tariff list in response to U.S. tariffs.

According to the office of Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, the changes are intended to match U.S. tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis. The ministry also said seafood that had previously been proposed for the list was removed because the United States is not imposing tariffs on Canadian seafood.

The revised list includes charcoal, copper wire, plaster products such as boards, seats and tiles, printed materials including pictures and photographs, and products used for packaging.

U.S. economists have also warned that growing concerns about the reliability of the United States as a trading partner are pushing Canadian companies toward other international markets. They say new trade relationships Canada establishes with other countries over the next several years may not be easily reversed, potentially leading to lasting changes in cross-border trade between Canada and the United States.
