BC safety officials have issued a total of nearly $30,000 in fines to campfires that violated the campfire ban over the three days of the long weekend.
The official said 26 people were issued tickets during the first long weekend since the campfire restrictions went into effect, with each ticket being $1,150, for a total of $29,900 in fines.
According to BC safety officials, 16 people were issued tickets in the Situskyzone alone, totaling $18,400. Two tickets were issued for illegal campfires on Vancouver Island and two tickets were issued to people who entered a restricted area near the Wesley Ridge wildfire.
The BC safety official said the Category 2 and Category 3 open fire bans have been in effect since July 17 and are expected to remain in effect until October 31.
