British Columbia health officials say another travel-related measles infection has been confirmed in the Lower Mainland, in a resident who visited Southeast Asia.

Fraser Health says in a statement that the case is unrelated to an infection last month involving a resident of the Vancouver Coastal Health region who was also infected after a trip to Southeast Asia.

It says the new case involves a Fraser Health resident, and health officials are directly following up with people known to have been exposed to the virus.

The statement says members of the public might have been exposed to measles if they were in the Royal Columbian Hospital emergency department from 2:30 p.m. on Monday to 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Measles is a highly infectious disease transmitted by airborne spread, but the statement says most people in Canada are immune due to immunization or previous natural infection.

Symptoms include fever, dry cough, runny nose, and red eyes, which may develop up to three weeks after being exposed.

Public Health Agency of Canada says there has been a "sharp rise" in measles cases across the globe, and the same trend continues in Canada, with 227 cases recorded so far this year, mostly in New Brunswick, Ontario, Québec and Manitoba.

Premier Smith's Alberta Next panel town hall tour arrives in Grande Prairie

Premier Danielle Smith's Alberta Next panel is in Grande Prairie tonight to brainstorm potential referendum questions aimed at wrenching more political control from Ottawa. The panel has been greeted by supportive crowds throughout its summer town hall tour around the province. It has often been cheered on in its proposals, including withdrawing from the Canada Pension Plan and withholding social services from some immigrants. But some have called the tour cynical wedge politics, saying it employs questionable survey methods to craft a predetermined anti-Ottawa outcome. And the pa

Man facing extradition after family of migrants froze to death at Canada-US border

Another man has been arrested in connection with the deaths of a migrant family on the Canada-U.S. border near Emerson, Man., in 2022. The federal justice department says Fenil Patel was arrested Sept. 5 on an extradition request from the United States. He is facing a hearing this week in Ontario Superior Court. Police in India announced in 2023 they were looking for Patel on human trafficking and other charges after a couple and their two children froze to death while trying to walk across the border in a frigid nighttime blizzard.
