B.C. Conservative MLA Caroline Elliott has vowed to repeal the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA), a controversial law concerning Indigenous rights. She argued that the legislation is harming investment and economic interests in the province and said her party is committed to scrapping it.
The law has also raised concerns among some private property owners. While the B.C. Conservatives oppose the legislation, B.C. Green MLA Emily Lowan has defended it, saying it has no connection to private property rights and that unnecessary fear has been created around the issue.
Repealing the law would require the introduction of a bill in the provincial legislature. However, it could take several weeks before B.C.'s new government takes office, as Chief Electoral Officer's official final election results are expected on November 18. The swearing-in ceremony can be scheduled after the results are finalized.
