The Punjab government has extended the detention of Amritpal Singh, Member of Parliament (MP) from Khadoor Sahib and leader of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ organization, under the National Security Act (NSA) at Assam’s Dibrugarh jail for an additional year.
This decision follows the state government’s recent move to transfer nine of Amritpal’s associates to Punjab jails without extending their NSA detention. Amritpal Singh has been in custody since April 2023.
Despite being in jail, Amritpal secured a resounding victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, representing the Khadoor Sahib constituency. The Punjab government has justified the extension of his detention by citing the potential threat posed by his activities.
