The Oscar-nominated Canadian star of the film "Juno" has come out as transgender.

The Halifax-raised Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, made the announcement in a powerful post on social media.

The star of the Toronto-shot Netflix series "The Umbrella Academy" says his preferred pronouns are he/they.

Page's letter thanks those who have supported him along the journey, and addresses the trauma trans people face from discrimination, hateful acts, and a lack of rights.

He says it feels remarkable "to finally love" who he is enough to pursue his "authentic self."

And he's been "endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community."

Canada inflation slows to 1.8 per cent in February, Statistics Canada says

Canada’s annual inflation rate slowed to 1.8 per cent in February, down from 2.3 per cent in January, according to new data released Monday by Statistics Canada. Driver killed in shooting on Queen Elizabeth II Highway near Leduc, police investigating

A driver was killed after shots were fired at a moving vehicle Saturday afternoon on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway near Leduc, according to police. Investigators say the incident happened around 2:50 p.m. near Township Road 490. Police said a black Honda Civic was travelling on the highway when a white or grey pickup truck pulled alongside and gunfire was directed at the car.
