Alberta Premier Danielle Smith visited Quebec this week as part of efforts to strengthen relations between the two provinces, which some political observers have informally dubbed the “Alberbec” or “Queberta” alliance.
Speaking during the visit, Smith acknowledged that Alberta and Quebec have historically disagreed on a range of policy issues. However, she said the provinces now share more common interests than differences, particularly in their concerns about Ottawa's relationship with provincial governments.
Smith criticized the federal government, arguing that both Alberta and Quebec have faced challenges in having their priorities recognized by decision-makers in Ottawa. According to Smith, the provinces are seeking greater influence over issues that affect their economies and jurisdictions.
The visit comes as both provinces move toward significant votes scheduled for October. Quebec voters are expected to head to the polls on Oct. 5 for a provincial election. Recent polling has shown the Parti Québécois leading, and the party has pledged to hold a referendum on Quebec sovereignty if elected.
Days later, Alberta voters are expected to participate in a vote on whether the province should pursue a legally binding referendum on separation from Canada.
