Alberta’s United Conservative government has introduced a new bill aimed at standardizing school report cards across the province.
Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides introduced the legislation, which would give the government authority to establish provincewide guidelines for report cards.
Speaking Thursday, Nicolaides said parents remain confused about the one-to-four grading system used in elementary schools, adding that addressing the issue is the province’s responsibility. However, he clarified that no final decision has been made on whether to introduce a letter-based grading system across Alberta.
If passed, the new rules would come into effect by fall 2027 in public, separate and Francophone schools.
The bill would also require all school authorities to publicly disclose how teachers spend their time when they are not teaching classes.
In addition, licensed child-care centres would be required to immediately notify parents about any serious incidents.
NDP education critic Rakhi Pancholi has strongly criticized the government’s move.
