Argentina reports case of monkeypox; man traveled from Spain
Argentina reported Latin America's first confirmed case of the monkeypox virus on Friday in a man who recently traveled to Spain.
The man, who is from the province of Buenos Aires, has monkeypox but health authorities are waiting to finish sequencing the virus before making the official announcement, said an official in Argentina’s Health Ministry. The official requested anonymity until the official announcement.
It is the first time the presence of the virus has been confirmed in Latin America.

Texas gunman was arrested 4 years ago for planning school shooting: Lawmaker
The 18-year-old suspected gunman in the Texas elementary school shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead was arrested four years ago for planning a school shooting, Congressman Tony Gonzales said on Friday.
"The shooter was arrested years ago, four years ago, for having this plan for basically saying, you know, when I'm a senior in 2022, I am going to shoot up a school," Gonzales said on Fox News. "Something fell between the cracks between then and now to allow this to happen."
Authorities previously claimed that alleged shooter Salvador Ramos had no known criminal history.

Alberta justice minister demands answers from Edmonton on crime
Alberta's justice minister says the city of Edmonton is failing to keep people safe from violent crime, particularly on public transit, and he's ordering Mayor Amarjeet Sohi to provide answers.
Tyler Shandro has told Sohi in a letter that he is invoking his powers under the province's Police Act to demand a report within two weeks on what the city will do to arrest a spike in serious crime.
He says the province is responsible for ensuring people receive effective police services and Edmonton residents are not getting that.

Alberta Finance Minister Toews not ruling out run for UCP leadership
Alberta Finance Minister Travis Toews is not ruling out a run to replace Jason Kenney as United Conservative party leader and premier.
Toews says there would be a number of factors to consider, including what the rules of the race will be.
But he says interest in the leadership race can be good for the party and the province.
The party is working on the logistics of the race, but the vote is not expected for months.
Two other cabinet ministers _ Rajan Sawhney and Jason Nixon _have also said they are considering running.

Spring session of the Alberta legislature wraps up
Alberta's legislature has wrapped up a tumultuous spring sitting, which may be followed by a new premier when politicians return to the house this fall.
Government House Leader Jason Nixon says the United Conservative government delivered on a range of issues,.There was more money for health care, a cut to the province's portion of gasoline taxes, and a balanced budget for the first time in years.

WhatsApp chats hold 'no value', says NCB chief as Aryan Khan gets clean chit in drugs case
Dropping the drugs charges against Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan's son Aryan Khan on Friday, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), SN Pradhan said WhatsApp chats without physical evidence hold "no value".
He said that a person can talk about anything on WhatsApp, but without physical existence, it's not complete evidence.
"There should be physical corroboration of WhatsApp chat. Courts have clarified that WhatsApp chat, in itself, holds no value. You can talk about anything on WhatsApp but if not corroborated with physical evidence, it's not complete evidence," the NCB head told media persons.

Man dead after interaction with police in east Toronto; school lockdowns lifted
Toronto police say a man has died after an interaction with officers during which a police gun was fired. Police Chief James Ramer says officers were called to the city's east end around 1 p.m. on reports of a person with a gun. He says officers were confronted by an individual, and that person is now dead. Ramer declined to give more details, citing an investigation by the province's police watchdog. An adult and two youths in custody for suspected involvement in the death of a man in Abbotsford
Police say an adult and two youths are in custody for ``suspected involvement'' in the death of a 41-year-old man last night in Abbotsford. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says the victim was attacked near the parking lot of a large shopping mall but it has not released a cause of death. I-HIT says the victim has no link to gangs and the attack is believed to have been an isolated incident. Sergeant David Lee says police are still searching for key evidence even though arrests have been made and anyone with dashcam or surveillance video is asked to contact the homicide team.

One person dead after ammonia leak at industrial park in Kamloops, B.C.
The City of Kamloops says one person has died in hospital following an ammonia leak at an industrial park. A spokeswoman with BC Emergency Health Services has previously said one person was taken to hospital in critical condition and two others were there in stable condition. She says six other patients in stable condition were assessed at the scene after five paramedic crews and two supervisors responded to a call at about 10:30 a.m. The city says in a written statement that the RCMP and firefighters responded to the scene and several businesses were evacuated.
