Ottawa's GST rebate on new homes would save typical 1st-time buyer $27K: PBO

The parliamentary budget officer says Ottawa's plan to slash the sales tax on housing would save an eligible first-time homebuyer an average of roughly $27,000 off the price of a newly built home. The federal government's fiscal watchdog predicts in a new analysis that a little over 71,000 new builds will quality for GST relief over the lifetime of the program. The proposal would see the federal portion of the sales tax eliminated on a new home worth up to $1 million if it's bought by a qualifying first-time homebuyer. The GST rebate would be phased down as the price of the home approaches $1.

B.C. Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal says he has a meeting scheduled with Prime Minister Mark Carney this week to talk about his controversial decision to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 in Alberta next week. Dhaliwal says he's spoken with hundreds of people who disagree with Carney's decision to invite Modi to the upcoming leaders summit — some of them members of the Liberal caucus. Former prime minister Justin Trudeau and the RCMP have linked agents of the Indian government to the murder of Canadian Sikh separatist activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, B.C., nearly two yea

Warmer than normal summer predicted across Canada, uncertain precipitation levels

Canada is expected to see a warmer than usual summer with uncertain precipitation levels in most provinces, Environment and Climate Change Canada says. Warning preparedness meteorologist Jennifer Smith says the warmth may be the result of short-term heat waves or the result of a more persistent heat that sticks around for months. The federal agency says Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario and northern Manitoba are especially likely to see a hot summer, though the odds are still high for the rest of the country. Smith says it's uncertain how much rain those areas will receive over the summer, but

Canada's federal voting system is constitutional, Ontario Court of Appeal rules

The Ontario Court of Appeal has affirmed the constitutionality of Canada's first-past-the-post electoral system. Fair Voting BC and the Springtide Collective for Democratic Society argued the first-past-the-post voting system violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms' guarantee of effective representation. The groups also said the system leads to the underrepresentation of women and other groups in Parliament, breaching the

Australia will recognize a Palestinian state, Prime Minister Albanese says

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that Australia will recognize a Palestinian state. This move aligns with recent signals from leaders in France, Britain and Canada. Albanese's decision follows internal pressure and criticism over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which he described as a ``catastrophe.'' The recognition will be formalized at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Conditions include no role for Hamas in a Palestinian government and the demilitarization of Gaza. Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the decision, while Australian Jewish and Pal
