Judge expected to sentence protesters at Coutts border protest

A judge is expected to hand down sentences today for two men convicted for their roles in the 2022 Coutts, Alta., border blockade. Anthony Olienick and Chris Carbert were convicted last month of public mischief over $5,000 and possessing a firearm dangerous to the public peace. Olienick was also convicted of possessing a pipe bomb. A jury found them not guilty of the most serious charge they faced: conspiracy to murder police officers. Most services for Metro Vancouver's specialized HandyDART transit system remain cancelled for a second week, with the operator saying it will respond to a new proposal from the union representing striking workers on Thursday. TransDev Canada says that's when talks were "previously scheduled" to resume, and no agreements were reached in Sunday's initial mediated talks. Joe McCann, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1724, says it's disappointed as it was willing to negotiate around the clock for its riders, accusing Transdev of lacking the same urgency. Nearly seven weeks since a wildfire forced the evacuation of Jasper National Park and burned nearly a third of the townsite's structures, Parks Canada says the blaze is now officially under control. Landon Shepherd, incident commander with the parks agency, told an online media briefing Saturday the change in status means the fire has been sufficiently suppressed to ensure it won't spread outside of its defined perimeter. Shepherd says that perimeter is 278 km long. The fire's status was last changed on Aug. 17 when it moved from being out-of-control to ``being held,'' which meant it wasn't

Justin Trudeau may be in for an earful as he meets with caucus in B.C.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may be bracing for an earful from his caucus when Liberal MPs gather in Nanaimo, B.C. today to plot their strategy for the coming election year. It will be the first time he faces them as a group since MPs departed Ottawa in the spring. Still stinging from a devastating byelection loss earlier this summer, the caucus is now also reeling from news that their national campaign director has resigned and the party can no longer count on the NDP to stave off an early election. "They should be giving the prime minister a rough ride," said strategist Ginny Roth, who serv

Propeller falls off BC Ferries vessel, spilling 800 litres of oil

About 800 litres of light hydraulic oil have spilled into the sea from a BC Ferries vessel after one of its propellers fell off this week. BC Ferries says the type of oil leaked "disperses quickly in the marine environment" and no oil sheens have been detected as a result of the spill from the 60-year-old Queen of New Westminster. The company says it is working with the Canadian Coast Guard to take "all appropriate measures" to mitigate possible impact to the environment. BC Ferries says in a statement that the Queen of New Westminster was taken out of service from its route between Metro Vanc

School fires are common in Kenyan boarding schools, where many students stay because parents believe it gives them more time to study. Some fires have been started by students during unrest.
