B.C. court orders pro-Palestinian camp at Vancouver Island University to shut down
Pro-Palestinian protesters who set up an encampment at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, B.C., have been told to pack up within 72 hours.
The B.C. Civil Liberties Association says a judge in Vancouver granted an injunction ordering the encampment removed on Thursday, and that no further camps be established in the same area for 150 days.
The university went to court against the protest following an Ontario court decision that granted the University of Toronto an injunction against an encampment there.

CBSA to use facial recognition app for people facing deportation: documents
The Canada Border Services Agency plans to implement an app that uses facial recognition technology to keep track of people who have been ordered to be deported from the country.
The mobile reporting app would use biometrics to confirm a person's identity and record their location data when they use the app to check in. Documents obtained through access-to-information indicate that the CBSA has proposed such an app as far back as 2021.
A spokesperson confirmed that an app called ReportIn will be launched this fall.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy says Kyiv troops have full control of the Russian town of Sudzha
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that Kyiv troops have full control of the Russian town of Sudzha in the Kursk region in their incursion into Russian territory.
The town, the largest that Ukraine has reportedly seized so far, had a prewar population of around 5,000 people. Natural gas flows from West Siberian gas fields through pipes that pass through Sudzha and cross the Ukrainian border into Ukraine’s system.
Zelenskyy said a Ukrainian military commander’s office is being set up in Sudzha. He didn’t elaborate on the details or the functions of the office.

Manitoba government follows other provinces in restricting cellphone use in schools
The Manitoba government is following other provinces in restricting the use of cellphones in classrooms beginning this school year.
There is to be a ban for students in kindergarten to Grade 8, while those in high school will be restricted from using their devices during class time but are free to use them during breaks and lunch.
The province says exemptions are to be made for medical or accessibility reasons.
The bans are designed to reduce distractions and help students focus in class.
Some Manitoba school divisions already had their own bans in place.

Amritpal's father raised questions about sending the drug smuggler to Dibrugarh Jail
Amritpal Singh, who became an MP from Punjab's Khadur Sahib, and his supporters are preparing to contest the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee elections. Evacuation order for Chilcotin River landslide area downgraded to alert
Residents can return home now that an evacuation order following a landslide that blocked a British Columbia river for days has been downgraded.
The Cariboo Regional District in B.C.'s central Interior issued an evacuation order on July 31 for 34 parcels of land along the Chilcotin River due to a landslide and declared a state of local emergency.
The evaluation order covered a stretch of the river about 30 kilometres long and spanning nearly 73 square kilometres.
The district says the evacuation order in the Chilcotin River landslide area has been downgraded to an evacuation alert.

Thundershowers to bring moisture to fire-weary regions of British Columbia
The BC Wildfire Service says thundershowers are expected to bring some much-needed moisture to areas of the province where hundreds of fires are burning, including a destructive blaze in the Kootenays.
It says in an update that the moisture will likely arrive in the Rocky Mountain Trench in the northeast, as well as the Southeast Fire Centre.
There were about 415 fires burning in British Columbia Wednesday, down slightly from the day before, with 163 out of control and four classified as wildfires of note, meaning they are highly visible or pose a threat to people or property.
