PM Trudeau names third national security adviser in as many years

A longtime public servant whose decades-long career has spanned portfolios from defence to foreign affairs is being tapped to be Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's third national security adviser in as many years.Vincent Rigby takes over the position after Trudeau's former national security adviser, Greta Bossenmaier, announced her retirement in November following a 35-year career in the federal public service. Multiple people shot in downtown Seattle

Multiple people have been shot in downtown Seattle, police said. The Seattle Police Department said on Twitter Wednesday that officers were investigating a shooting near the heavily trafficked area. The suspect fled and police were searching for him. Police said medics and detectives were responding to the scene. It's the third shooting in downtown Seattle in two days.

WHO hold off decision on global outbreak of Wuhan coronavirus

The World Health Organization has put off deciding whether to declare the outbreak of a new coronavirus in China a global health emergency. It is asking its expert committee to continue meeting tomorrow for a second day. The W-H-O's Dr. Maria Kerkove says so far the evidence suggests the new respiratory illness spreads only through close contact. So far 17 deaths have been blamed on the virus, and hundreds of others are sick, mainly in China.

55 year old dies in crash in Surrey

R-C-M-P say a 55-year-old man was hit and killed on 188th Street near 24th Avenue in south Surrey this morning. First responders tried to save the injured, but the efforts went in vain. Reports suggest the drivers stayed at scene and was cooperating. Two people have died in separate Metro Vancouver pedestrian accidents.

RCMP in Langford investigating a homicide

R-C-M-P in Langford, just west of Victoria, are investigating a homicide. They say the body of a man was found inside a vehicle as officers responded to a single-car crash in a rural area of the community late Monday night. Police have not said how the unnamed man died, but foul play is suspected and members of the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit are appealing for witnesses, dash cam video or home security tapes. The case was the second of the day on Monday for the major crimes unit after members were also called to the North Cowichan/Duncan area when a body was found on Cowichan

Woman hit by van in Vancouver succumbs to injuries

A woman in her 70s has died after being hit by a delivery van as she and her husband crossed a street in downtown Vancouver. A statement from police says the Vancouver resident was hit late Sunday afternoon and died later in hospital. Her husband, who is also in his 70s, remains in hospital with serious injuries. Police say the two were in a marked crosswalk when they were run down by the van that was turning left. RCMP marine unit rescues 11 people after canoe overturns in Burrard Inlet

Eleven people, including several youths, were rescued from the waters of Burrard Inlet after a large canoe overturned near Ambleside Beach on Saturday afternoon, according to the BC RCMP. Police said officers with the RCMP Tactical Marine Operations Group (TMOG), who were conducting patrols in Burrard Inlet, received a distress call over Marine VHF Channel at about 3:30 p.m. on July 5 reporting an overturned canoe off Ambleside Beach. Four TMOG vessels were dispatched to the scene. According to the RCMP, officers arriving at the location found all 11 occupants clinging to the overturned canoe.

Report says Alberta has widest gender pay gap in Canada

Women in Alberta continue to earn less than men than in any other province, according to a new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). The report found that women in Alberta earn 64 cents for every dollar earned annually by men, compared with a national average of 72 cents. Looking at weekly earnings, women in the province earn 71 cents for every dollar earned by men, while the national average is 80 cents, according to the report. Police say six family members, including children, worked as a team to pull off a jewelry store heist in Calgary. They say the family went into the store at CF Market Mall last month. A 72-year-old man from the United States has died after being struck by a cyclist while crossing a downtown Vancouver street, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
