Crews are battling a large fire that has erupted in Mission's downtown core. Mission Fire Rescue Service is on the scene and called in crews from Abbotsford Fire Rescue. BC Hydro says in a tweet that the fire has caused an outage affecting more than 17-hundred customers in Mission and Abbotsford.

BC's provincial health officer says she is concerned about a growing outbreak of COVID-19 at a federal prison in Mission. Doctor Bonnie Henry says there are now 35 confirmed cases at the Mission Institution and eight people are in hospital. Henry says all efforts are underway to contain the outbreak at the facility but the virus spread before it was recognized. There is still only one positive case at the Okanagan Correctional Centre but testing and surveillance are ongoing.

British Columbia is reporting 11 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the province's total to 69. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says B.C.'s total number of cases has increased to 1,490, up 45 from Saturday. Henry says 137 people are in hospital, with 58 of those in intensive care. She says there remains 20 long-term care facilities with COVID-19 outbreaks. Henry says a COVID-19 outbreak at the federal Mission Institution is causing concerns, with 35 positive cases and eight people now in hospital. Henry says all efforts are underway to contain the outbreak at the prison.

Alberta is reporting 81 new cases of COVID-19. The province's chief medical health officer Dr. Deena Hinshaw says the total number of cases is now at 1,732. She also says there have been two additional deaths, bringing the total fatalities in the province to 46. She says 877 people with COVID-19 have recovered.

Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says deaths from COVID-19 will continue to rise even as the number of cases overall in Canada may go down. Tams says that's because of outbreaks in long-term care facilities. She says close to half of the deaths being tracked are linked to long-term care facilities. Tam says all jurisdictions are trying to deal with those outbreaks but as people learn more about how to respond, new measures are being put in place.

The BC Wildfire Service lists the fire danger rating across most of the province as low to moderate but firefighters in several regions still had a busy Easter weekend. The wildfire service website shows crews responded to 11 blazes between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Most were barely larger than spot fires and were quickly handled, but of the eight reported on Sunday, four remained listed as out of control by midnight. They included a fire covering half a square kilometre in the southern Interior east of Merritt, and two of three separate fires along Highway 3 south of Cawston in the Simi

This is something that at one time would have been unheard of. Bernie Sanders has endorsed Joe Biden's presidential candidacy. The two former rivals made a joint online appearance today. Sanders says he's asking all Americans to come together to support Biden's candidacy. The Democrats are showing solidarity after years of bitter divide. Sanders recently admitted he can't beat Biden for the Democratic nod.

US President Donald Trump is tweeting that only he can make the decision when states can re-open businesses and ease social distancing measures. That's setting up a potential battle because legal experts say that power rests with state governors. The White House has signaled that May 1st is a target date to reopen some parts of the country but top public health officials say those decisions will be driven by scientific data.
