Smith, focus of rivals' debate criticism, deemed UCP leadership front-runner

Political observers say this week's United Conservative leadership debate demonstrated that former Wildrose leader Danielle Smith is the front-runner in the race to replace Jason Kenney as party leader and premier. Pollster Janet Brown and political scientist Duane Bratt say the way Smith was attacked and criticized by multiple opponents at the debate make it clear she is seen as the one to beat. Smith came under fire for her proposed Alberta sovereignty act, which she promises to pass this fall if she wins. The act would grant the province the power to ignore federal laws and court rulings de

Ministry of Transportation asking drivers to be prepared for heavy traffic ahead of BC Day long weekend

The Ministry of Transportation says anyone mulling a road trip for the BC Day long weekend should plan ahead and expect heavy traffic. A statement from the Ministry says delays are likely on Highway 5, the Coquihalla Highway, as repairs are still underway after last fall's catastrophic rainstorms, floods and washouts. The heat wave that is causing sweltering conditions in many parts of B-C is also expected to continue until at least Monday and the ministry says motorist should plan for that, too. Drivers are advised to pack lots of water for people and pets and to ensure their vehicles can ha

Pope Francis has come face-to-face with a long-standing demand from Indigenous peoples during his Canada pilgrimage. Pope Francis was at Quebec's shrine of Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre to give the second mass of his Canadian tour. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says there is a lot of work to do to correct the deep wounds of the past for Canada's Indigenous people and the pope's messages on this trip is just the beginn
