Canada Post says 25% stamp price increase takes effect today

The cost to send a letter in Canada is increasing by about 25 per cent, effective today. Canada Post says the cost of stamps for domestic mail bought in a booklet, coil or pane has increased by 25 cents to $1.24 per stamp. The cost of a single domestic stamp is now $1.44, up from $1.15. Canada Post proposed the increase in September last year. It says the higher price is required to better align stamp prices with the rising cost of providing letter mail service to all Canadians. The rate increases also include U.S. and international letters and domestic registered mail. Commercial letter mail

No indication Trump will back down on tariffs, but retaliating not the answer: Smith

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she received no indication from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump over the weekend that he plans to back down on implementing hefty tariffs on Canadian products. But Smith says cutting off oil and gas exports to the south in retaliation, which is something the federal government hasn't ruled out, isn't feasible. She says the federal government should never "threaten" something it can't afford to do. Smith visited Trump at his Florida home over the weekend as a guest of Canadian businessman and television personality Kevin O'Leary. She says the incoming presi

Magnitude 6.9 earthquake rattles southwestern Japan, followed by tsunami warnings

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 has hit southwestern Japan, the country's Meteorological Agency said Monday. Tsunami warnings were issued for Miyazaki Prefecture, where the temblor was centered, in the southwestern island of Kyushu, as well as nearby Kochi Prefecture, shortly after the quake struck at 9:19 p.m. local time, according to the agency. The extent of damage was not immediately clear. Japan is frequently hit by earthquakes because of its location along the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

Christy Clark Considers Liberal Leadership Run, Receives Support from Political Allies

Former BC Premier Christy Clark could run for the Liberal Party leadership to replace Trudeau. Clark left provincial politics in 2017 and joined law firm Bennett Jones as a senior advisor. Reports suggest she is also receiving offers to help raise funds for a potential campaign. Sources say she has been preparing for the leadership race for months. Mike de Jong, who worked with her as finance minister for a long time, says Clark's political acumen cannot be underestimated. BC Conservative leader John Rustad also supported de Jong's comments. Rustad, who served as a cabinet minister in the Cla

Strong Job Growth in Canada Dampens Expectations of Further Interest Rate Cuts

Strong job data in Canada's labor market has dampened expectations of further interest rate cuts by the Bank of Canada. Statistics Canada said in a report released on Friday that the Canadian economy added 91,000 jobs in December, the largest monthly increase in the past two years. At the same time, the unemployment rate fell to 6.7 percent from 6.8 percent, indicating that the Canadian economy is responding to the Bank of Canada's easing of monetary policy. Following the latest labor market data, financial markets have reduced the likelihood of another rate cut at the Bank of Canada's next m

B.C. Conservatives Promise $1,000 Annual Tax Cut for Low- and Middle-Income Families

B.C. Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson has announced a proposed $1,000 annual provincial income-tax cut for low- and middle-income families. Speaking at a grocery store in Surrey, Doerkson said that if elected premier, his government would raise the provincial basic personal income-tax exemption to $32,000. He said this would mean British Columbians would pay no provincial income tax on their first $32,000 of income. Doerkson said a two-income household could save up to $2,000 a year under the proposal, with the money remaining in families’ pockets rather than going to the government. He al

Speaking during a campaign stop in Richmond, Eby said the move would mean B.C. drivers would go a total of 10 years without facing additional increases in their vehicle insurance rates. Eby credited his government’s no-fault insurance reforms for helping move B.C. from having some of the most expensive auto insurance in Canada to among the most affordable. He also criticized B.C. Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson, warning that insurance rates could double again if the Co

Bill C-39 Faces Vote in House of Commons Amid Strike Powers Controversy

Canada’s House of Commons is set to vote today on the federal government’s controversial Bill C-39, which aims to fast-track approvals for major projects. The bill has drawn criticism over a provision that would amend Section 107 of the Canada Labour Code, giving the Labour Minister the power to intervene in an ongoing strike by citing the national interest. NDP parliamentary leader Don Davies has called the bill an attack on workers’ and Indigenous rights, as well as environmental protections. He said he is concerned about a growing trend of power being concentrated in the hands of cabi
