Bloc wins Montreal Liberal stronghold, NDP holds on to seat in Winnipeg byelection

The Bloc Québécois has won the Montreal Liberal stronghold riding of LaSalle—Émard—Verdun after an extremely tight three-way race with the NDP. The resounding celebrations are another blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who faced calls to resign after losing another longtime Liberal seat in Toronto to the Conservatives in June. Elections Canada reported all 187 polls showing the Bloc won the seat 248 votes ahead of the Liberals. Further west in Winnipeg, the NDP maintained its stronghold in the riding of Elmwood — Transcona in a tight byelection race with the Conservatives. Electio

The proceedings of the Canadian Parliament begin today, Poilievre can submit a no-confidence motion

The Canadian Parliament begins today and during this session, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre can introduce a no-confidence motion against PM Justin Trudeau's minority Liberal government at any time. The special thing is that although NDP president Jagmeet Singh has broken the agreement with the Liberals, the party has not shown any interest in elections in the near future, but Poilievre is putting full pressure to topple the government. He has also challenged the Bloc Quebecois to face the Liberals. Poilievre also alleged that Jagmeet Singh is making voters wait for a change of governm

Albertans are being updated on new policies: Premier Smith

Premier Danielle Smith is defending making a string of policy announcements at private United Conservative Party events, saying Albertans shouldn't be surprised by her agenda. When asked why she's not offering the details to all Albertans, Smith says she regularly talks with them on her call-in radio show and says it's no secret she takes guidance from party members. She says Albertans shouldn't be caught off guard by any of the laws her government plans to introduce when the legislature convenes in the fall. Last month, Smith told a UCP town hall she could transfer the operation of some Albe

Harris and Trump meet for first time as high-stakes presidential debate begins

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump met for the first time face-to-face Tuesday night for perhaps their only debate before November’s presidential election. The matchup is offering Americans their most detailed look at a campaign that’s dramatically changed since the last debate in June. In rapid fashion, President Joe Biden bowed out of the race after his disastrous performance, Trump survivedan assassination attempt and both sides chose their running mates. Harris is intent on demonstrating that she can press the Democratic case against Trump better than Biden did. Trump, in turn, is tryin

Liberals and NDP to address their caucuses today

New Democrats are kicking off a three-day caucus retreat today in Montreal, days after leaving the supply-and-confidence agreement with the Liberals. Leader Jagmeet Singh announced on Wednesday that he had "ripped up" the agreement with the minority government. Singh says the Liberals are too weak to fight for Canadians and can't stop the Conservatives, offering himself as a credible alternative to Pierre Poilievre. The retreat is also happening in one of the two cities where the N-D-P is hoping to win a byelection on September 16th. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also expected to address hi

Employer considers union plan in week two of Metro Vancouver HandyDART transit strike

Most services for Metro Vancouver's specialized HandyDART transit system remain cancelled for a second week, with the operator saying it will respond to a new proposal from the union representing striking workers on Thursday. TransDev Canada says that's when talks were "previously scheduled" to resume, and no agreements were reached in Sunday's initial mediated talks. Joe McCann, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1724, says it's disappointed as it was willing to negotiate around the clock for its riders, accusing Transdev of lacking the same urgency. Trump says U.S. blockade in Strait of Hormuz to be lifted

U.S. President Donald Trump says a U.S. naval blockade affecting ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz will be lifted, following days of disruption in one of the world’s busiest oil transit routes. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said vessels delayed in the strait “may start the process of ‘heading home,’” adding that the blockade had been “amazing and unprecedented.” According to international energy agencies, roughly 20 per cent of global crude oil shipments move through the Strait of Hormuz during peacetime.
